M-Audio Torq Xponent Advanced DJ Performance/Production System Features
The M-Audio Torq Xponent Advanced DJ Performance/Production System is an integrated hardware/software DJ system. The Hardware controls are pre-mapped to corresponging parameters in the Torq software. The hardware combines a 2-channel DJ mixer with CDJ-style tactile controls, letting you cue, mix and manipulate digital files without touching the computer.
It has 4 RCA outputs for independent signals to house system and booth monitors (plus a standard 1/4-inch headphone output for cueing), and includes 4-output USB audio interface. The software enables easy beat-matching and crossfading, as well as doing more than that. It has a 16-cell, tempo-synced sampler, looping and multiple cue points. QuickScratch feature lets you instantly scratch with any two loaded samples. Tempo Anchors remove tempo variations from your tracks, or cause other songs to follow the tempo changes. Tempo Master synchronizes all tracks, samples and effects within Torq, while MIDI clock transmits tempo information to other equipment. Torq is ReWire-compatible with Pro Tools M-Powered software and other popular applications, and automatically locks to the current session tempo.
Torq 1.5 gives you 10 essential effects, and allows you to stack multiple distortion, filter, repeat, chorus or bit-reduction effects while mixing. You can record your creations easily with the integrated performance recorder. It allows you to create recallable snapshots of your favorite EQ, effect and mixer settings, and supports third-party VST effects plug-ins. Xponent features 64 assignable backlit buttons (including Play, Cue, Seek, Loop, Key and Sync controls), two volume sliders, eight assignable knobs for effect control and two 100mm pitch sliders. The built-in touchpad/assignable X/Y controller allows you to control your mouse or the effects in Torq.
Torq 1.5 DJ software for Mac and PC automatically configures itself to work with Xponent. The hardware can be MIDI-mapped to other digital audio workstation software including Ableton Live.
The package includes Xponent USB DJ Controller and Audio Interface, Torq CD-ROM (Torq Software, Xponent Drivers, and Documentation), USB Cable, 12VDC 1000mA Power Supply, Quick Start Guide.

M-Audio Torq Xponent Advanced DJ Performance/Production System Pros/Cons.
Pros.
The M-Audio Torq Xponent Advanced DJ Performance/Production System gets a reasonable 3.7 user rating from 26 users. Users comment that using such a hardware/software SJ system is by far the cheapest way to get such features.
Cons.
One of the customer complaints was that the M-Audio Torq Xponent has jog-wheels that are a little unpredictable in use. There are also comments that the hardware feels “cheap” although it works well, and the same user says that realistically, you’d pay a lot more for a purely hardware system, so comparing such different price-points is not realistic anyway.
Scratching is not as good as vinyl, say users, although again, the price of two vinyl turntables and a simple scratch mixer would be much more than the Exponent, and the Exponent delivers much more in terms of effects, sampling, beat-matching etc. so this is comparing very different price-points.
Some users say that the software only works some of the time, some say it can crash in the middle of a set, and some users say that it doesn’t work at all with their system. Some user say that the built-in soundcard on the hardware is poor quality.
Some users say that the customer support is bad.

M-Audio Torq Xponent Advanced DJ Performance/Production System in use
The Torq Xponent is said to be a great system by many, but a significant percentage of users had problems with it. (see below for better-rated alternatives).

Alternatives to the M-Audio Torq Xponent Advanced DJ Performance/Production System
The Alternatives to the M-Audio Torq Xponent Advanced DJ Performance/Production System include the Numark MIXTRACK PRO (see our product report on that), which is cheaper than the Xponent gets a much better 4.3 user rating (from 42 user reviews). However, the Mixtrack Pro seems to have less features on the hardware, than the Xponent (although the software provides a similar set of features). The even cheaper and equally well-rated Numark MIXTRACK DJ Software Controller (see our product report on that), is (at the time of writing) less than 1/3 of the price of the Xponent, but has no built-in sound-card, so you have to buy one separately, such as the very well-rated Native Instruments AUDIO 2 DJ Interface, which gets a superb 4.6 user rating from 11 users, and is the best-rated option in its price range (much better-rated than the slightly cheaper Numak interface). The standard Mixtrack comes with a version of Traktor software.
Other alternatives include the Hercules DJ Console RMX (see our report on that) which is the best-rated DJ console on Amazon (at the time of writing), and priced slightly cheaper than the Xponent, or the Hercules DJ 4 Set, which is also priced about the same, or the more expensive Hercules DJ Console 4-MX
which is their “Pro” model, which has improved jog wheels and 4 deck controllability. It gets an excellent 4.6 user rating from 5 users (at the time of writing).
For other cheaper alternatives there is the Hercules DJ Control MP3 e2 (see our product report on that), which is (at the time of writing) even less expensive than the standard Mixtrack, and gets good user ratings. Priced above that (but below the 4-MX), is the Hercules DJ Console MK4, which gets a good 4.1 overall user rating from 10 users. It has 4 outs plus audio inputs (unlike the more expensive DJ 4 Set), and gets good user reviews.
For more expensive alternatives, the Vestax VCI-300 Dedicated USB MIDI DJ Controller for Serato ITCH (Black), gets an outstanding 4.5 user rating by 11 users (an even higher rating than the Mixtrack Pro), with most user being very happy with it. There are some complaints about the mic input and headphone level (both of which can be fixed by using a small, cheap audio mixer), but mostly it gets very good reviews, but at well over twice the price of the Exponent, is it really worth the money? Users say that Serato Itch software is excellent for scratching, professional and well laid out, but also mention that it has no effects at all. So you need to think carefully about what features you want in your DJ system, to choose between the Vestax and the others.
Another more expensive alternative is the Numark MIXDECK Universal Dj System, which gets a good 3.8 user rating from 9 customer reviews. It includes CD decks and an iPod port, as well as plenty of inputs for other equipment (such as vinyl turntables, samplers etc.), and a range of outputs too, as well as effects and a wide ranging pitch control with key-lock etc. A few users had problems, including the system not working at all with some computers, and the system freezing sometimes. As usual, users said that the customer support from Numark is poor.
Is a DJ console right for your needs?
As well as comparing different DJ consoles, you might like to ask yourself if a DJ console is really the most suitable equipment for your needs. The obvious alternative is a hardware setup, either vinyl or CD decks
, with a DJ mixer (some 2CD decks come with a mixer built-in). As users of the Exponent say, if you are going to be doing a lot of scratching, vinyl is the best (although Serato might come close, as well as offering other features not available with vinyl).
Don’t forget that some DJ mixers can also be used as MIDI controllers for most DJ software. So it is possible to have the best of both worlds at once. An example of this is the Behringer DDM4000 DJ Mixer (see our product report on that), which can be used to control most DJ software, as well as being a well-rated hardware DJ mixer in its own right.
Another consideration is, of course, your music collection. It makes sense to make use of music you already own, and while it is relatively easy to transfer vinyl and CD’s to mp3′s it is not realistic to transfer mp3′s to vinyl. Buying new music might be cheaper as mp3′s than other formats, unless you are especially interested in particular kinds of older music that you can get used versions of. Searching music is obviously very different with different equipment, as good DJ software can instantly search huge numbers of mp3′s for track title (or partial title), artist, genre, bpm or other factors, but looking through physical records or CD’s is a very different matter, and if you need to have access to a large amount of music, transportation is a factor too. A DJ console is ideal for anyone starting DJing or starting with DJing mp3′s.
