M-Audio Torq Xponent Advanced DJ Performance/Production System Features

The M-Audio Torq Xponent Advanced DJ Performance/Production System is an integrated hardware/software DJ system. The Hardware controls are pre-mapped to corresponging parameters in the Torq software. The hardware combines a 2-channel DJ mixer with CDJ-style tactile controls, letting you cue, mix and manipulate digital files without touching the computer.

It has 4 RCA outputs for independent signals to house system and booth monitors (plus a standard 1/4-inch headphone output for cueing), and includes 4-output USB audio interface. The software enables easy beat-matching and crossfading, as well as doing more than that. It has a 16-cell, tempo-synced sampler, looping and multiple cue points. QuickScratch feature lets you instantly scratch with any two loaded samples. Tempo Anchors remove tempo variations from your tracks, or cause other songs to follow the tempo changes. Tempo Master synchronizes all tracks, samples and effects within Torq, while MIDI clock transmits tempo information to other equipment. Torq is ReWire-compatible with Pro Tools M-Powered software and other popular applications, and automatically locks to the current session tempo.

Torq 1.5 gives you 10 essential effects, and allows you to stack multiple distortion, filter, repeat, chorus or bit-reduction effects while mixing. You can record your creations easily with the integrated performance recorder. It allows you to create recallable snapshots of your favorite EQ, effect and mixer settings, and supports third-party VST effects plug-ins. Xponent features 64 assignable backlit buttons (including Play, Cue, Seek, Loop, Key and Sync controls), two volume sliders, eight assignable knobs for effect control and two 100mm pitch sliders. The built-in touchpad/assignable X/Y controller allows you to control your mouse or the effects in Torq.

Torq 1.5 DJ software for Mac and PC automatically configures itself to work with Xponent. The hardware can be MIDI-mapped to other digital audio workstation software including Ableton Live.

The package includes Xponent USB DJ Controller and Audio Interface, Torq CD-ROM (Torq Software, Xponent Drivers, and Documentation), USB Cable, 12VDC 1000mA Power Supply, Quick Start Guide.

. . .

M-Audio Torq Xponent Advanced DJ Performance/Production System Pros/Cons.

Pros.

The M-Audio Torq Xponent Advanced DJ Performance/Production System gets a reasonable 3.7 user rating from 26 users. Users comment that using such a hardware/software SJ system is by far the cheapest way to get such features.

Cons.

One of the customer complaints was that the M-Audio Torq Xponent has jog-wheels that are a little unpredictable in use. There are also comments that the hardware feels “cheap” although it works well, and the same user says that realistically, you’d pay a lot more for a purely hardware system, so comparing such different price-points is not realistic anyway.

Scratching is not as good as vinyl, say users, although again, the price of two vinyl turntables and a simple scratch mixer would be much more than the Exponent, and the Exponent delivers much more in terms of effects, sampling, beat-matching etc. so this is comparing very different price-points.

Some users say that the software only works some of the time, some say it can crash in the middle of a set, and some users say that it doesn’t work at all with their system. Some user say that the built-in soundcard on the hardware is poor quality.

Some users say that the customer support is bad.

. . .

M-Audio Torq Xponent Advanced DJ Performance/Production System in use

The Torq Xponent is said to be a great system by many, but a significant percentage of users had problems with it. (see below for better-rated alternatives).

. . .

Alternatives to the M-Audio Torq Xponent Advanced DJ Performance/Production System

The Alternatives to the M-Audio Torq Xponent Advanced DJ Performance/Production System include the Numark MIXTRACK PRO (see our product report on that), which is cheaper than the Xponent gets a much better 4.3 user rating (from 42 user reviews). However, the Mixtrack Pro seems to have less features on the hardware, than the Xponent (although the software provides a similar set of features). The even cheaper and equally well-rated Numark MIXTRACK DJ Software Controller (see our product report on that), is (at the time of writing) less than 1/3 of the price of the Xponent, but has no built-in sound-card, so you have to buy one separately, such as the very well-rated Native Instruments AUDIO 2 DJ Interface, which gets a superb 4.6 user rating from 11 users, and is the best-rated option in its price range (much better-rated than the slightly cheaper Numak interface). The standard Mixtrack comes with a version of Traktor software.

Other alternatives include the Hercules DJ Console RMX (see our report on that) which is the best-rated DJ console on Amazon (at the time of writing), and priced slightly cheaper than the Xponent, or the Hercules DJ 4 Set, which is also priced about the same, or the more expensive Hercules DJ Console 4-MX which is their “Pro” model, which has improved jog wheels and 4 deck controllability. It gets an excellent 4.6 user rating from 5 users (at the time of writing).

For other cheaper alternatives there is the Hercules DJ Control MP3 e2 (see our product report on that), which is (at the time of writing) even less expensive than the standard Mixtrack, and gets good user ratings. Priced above that (but below the 4-MX), is the Hercules DJ Console MK4, which gets a good 4.1 overall user rating from 10 users. It has 4 outs plus audio inputs (unlike the more expensive DJ 4 Set), and gets good user reviews.

For more expensive alternatives, the Vestax VCI-300 Dedicated USB MIDI DJ Controller for Serato ITCH (Black), gets an outstanding 4.5 user rating by 11 users (an even higher rating than the Mixtrack Pro), with most user being very happy with it. There are some complaints about the mic input and headphone level (both of which can be fixed by using a small, cheap audio mixer), but mostly it gets very good reviews, but at well over twice the price of the Exponent, is it really worth the money? Users say that Serato Itch software is excellent for scratching, professional and well laid out, but also mention that it has no effects at all. So you need to think carefully about what features you want in your DJ system, to choose between the Vestax and the others.

Another more expensive alternative is the Numark MIXDECK Universal Dj System, which gets a good 3.8 user rating from 9 customer reviews. It includes CD decks and an iPod port, as well as plenty of inputs for other equipment (such as vinyl turntables, samplers etc.), and a range of outputs too, as well as effects and a wide ranging pitch control with key-lock etc. A few users had problems, including the system not working at all with some computers, and the system freezing sometimes. As usual, users said that the customer support from Numark is poor.

Is a DJ console right for your needs?

As well as comparing different DJ consoles, you might like to ask yourself if a DJ console is really the most suitable equipment for your needs. The obvious alternative is a hardware setup, either vinyl or CD decks, with a DJ mixer (some 2CD decks come with a mixer built-in). As users of the Exponent say, if you are going to be doing a lot of scratching, vinyl is the best (although Serato might come close, as well as offering other features not available with vinyl).

Don’t forget that some DJ mixers can also be used as MIDI controllers for most DJ software. So it is possible to have the best of both worlds at once. An example of this is the Behringer DDM4000 DJ Mixer (see our product report on that), which can be used to control most DJ software, as well as being a well-rated hardware DJ mixer in its own right.

Another consideration is, of course, your music collection. It makes sense to make use of music you already own, and while it is relatively easy to transfer vinyl and CD’s to mp3′s it is not realistic to transfer mp3′s to vinyl. Buying new music might be cheaper as mp3′s than other formats, unless you are especially interested in particular kinds of older music that you can get used versions of. Searching music is obviously very different with different equipment, as good DJ software can instantly search huge numbers of mp3′s for track title (or partial title), artist, genre, bpm or other factors, but looking through physical records or CD’s is a very different matter, and if you need to have access to a large amount of music, transportation is a factor too. A DJ console is ideal for anyone starting DJing or starting with DJing mp3′s.

See our more detailed guide to choosing the best DJ setup for your needs.

The Gemini DJ CDMP-6000 DJ Package.

We’ll go over the features and facts a bit later on, but first, here’s a few user comments . .

. . .

Gemini DJ CDMP-6000 DJ Package Features

The Gemini DJ CDMP-6000 DJ Package has both playback functions and a mixer section. You can use CDs, MP3s, WAV files, the CD decks are fully compatible with audio CDs, CD-Rs and MP3 CDs, and the USB port allows you to connect a USB device and use the MP3 and WAV files stored on that drive. It has two touch-sensitive jog wheels that let you Search, Scratch and Pitch Bend (+/- 26%), a variable pitch control fader and a Loop Section, plus the ability to create and store cue points. It has a BPM Tap function, and anti-shock playback using RAM buffer memory.

The mixer section includes 3-band EQ, volume and gain controls, a channel input selector, microphone volume and a stereo VU Meter. The unit has Master XLR and RCA outputs, Record RCA outputs, headphone out, convertible Phono/Line RCA inputs and microphone inputs.

. . .

Gemini DJ CDMP-6000 DJ Package Pros/Cons.

Pros.

The Gemini DJ CDMP-6000 DJ Package is given a 5-star rating from one user on Amazon. It has the advantage of being able to play from a USB memory device, so you don’t need to bring CD’s with you.

Cons.

Although there are no customer complaints about the Gemini DJ CDMP-6000 , one user review on Amazon is not enough to consider it reliably user-rated, and there are few available user reviews off Amazon at the time of writing.

. . .

Gemini DJ CDMP-6000 DJ Package in use

The DJ CDMP-6000 is said by the user-review on Amazon, to be a professional piece of equipment at a very good price, although there are more reliably-rated alternatives at an even better price (see below).

. . .

Alternatives to the Gemini DJ CDMP-6000 DJ Package

The Alternatives to the CDMP-6000 include :-

2-deck DJ systems.

The NUMARK CD Mix 1 DJ Package (see our product report on that) is much more reliably rated that the Gemini, with an excellent 4.7 user rating from 7 user reviews. It’s also cheaper than the Gemini, with similar features (but only 12% pitch correction, and you’d need an additional phono pre-amp to connect turntables into it).

The only way of getting a well-rated cheaper DJ system cheaper than that would be using DJ software on a computer:- you can even get a well-rated hardware DJ console, plus software, all for a lot less money than the “CD Mix 1″, such as the Hercules DJ Control MP3 e2 (See our product report on that), and of course, ripping your CD collection to mp3′s is easy enough.

For a much more expensive CD DJ system with more facilities and much higher quality, the Numark MIXDECK Universal Dj System (See our product report on that) gets a very good 3.8 overall user rating. It also acts as a MIDI controller so can be used to control most DJ software for even greater flexibility and facilities. You get lots of effects, harmonic mixing, looping, sampling, hot cues etc. which enable live remixing.

DJ CD players

For top quality, the Pioneer CDJ-2000 Professional Multi Player gets a 5 star rating from all 4 of the currently available user reviews on Amazon, and come highly recommended, but two of them would be more than 10 times the price of the Gemini, and that’s without a DJ mixer.

Very well-rated, but more reasonably priced DJ CD decks include the Denon DNS1200 USB DJ CD Player which gets a very good 4.2 user rating by 6 users and includes 4 effects, 3 platter effects, key adjustment, USB connection, and MIDI control of DJ software. The slightly cheaper (at the time of writing) Pioneer CDJ-200 Pro Cd/Mp3 Player gets a very good 4.0 user rating from 6 users, and has 3 jog-wheel controlled effects. For a cheaper but well-rated CD deck, consider the Stanton S252 DJ Table-Top CD Player with Fader Start and Digital Outputs, which gets three 5-star user ratings.

For suitable DJ mixers to go with CD decks (and/or vinyl turntables), the best-rated (from more than a few user reviews) option is the Behringer DDM4000 DJ Mixer (see our product report on that), which gets an outstanding 4.7 user rating from 13 user reviews. It has lots of features including sampling, effects and can be used as a MIDI controller for DJ software too. For a cheaper but well-rated DJ mixer, Gemini PS121x Professional 2 Channel Stereo Mixer gets a very good 4.3 user rating by 3 users, and is simple but produces a sound which users say is “clean” and does a good job for the price.

. . .

Accessories for the Gemini DJ CDMP-6000 DJ Package

The Accessories for the Gemini DJ CDMP-6000 DJ Package include a PA system to play it through.

You might also want a dynamic microphone (the Gemini has both 1/4 inch and XLR mic inputs). The NADY SP-4C Dynamic Microphone is a low-cost microphone which comes with a 1/4 inch cable, and gets a 4.0 user rating overall from 70 user reviews, although get a minority of user reviews saying that it is unreliable, so if you want something better rated, pay a bit more for the Behringer XM8500 Dynamic Microphone, Cardioid, which gets an excellent 4.7 overall user rating (with no negative reviews at all), plus a suitable mic cable such as the Pyle-Pro PPMJL15 Professional Microphone Cable (1/4” Male to XLR Female, 15 ft.) . You might also want a microphone stand or two.

You might need some more music CD’s.

NUMARK CD Mix 1 DJ Package Pros/Cons.

Pros.

The NUMARK CD Mix 1 DJ Package gets an outstanding 4.7 user rating from 7 user reviews. Users say that it does a great job as a basic CD-mixer, or as a back-up option. It’s said to be very easy to use and quick to learn.

One of the customer complaints was that the NUMARK CD Mix 1 can only connect vinyl turntables via additional phono pre-amps. Other than that minor point, there are no user complaints (at the timeof writing).

. . .

NUMARK CD Mix 1 DJ Package in use

The CD Mix 1 is a basic 2CD setup, but does it’s job well according to users. It might not have the advanced features of more expensive setups, but does a professional job of CD mixing.

. . .

Alternatives to the NUMARK CD Mix 1 DJ Package

The Alternatives to the NUMARK CD Mix 1 DJ Package:-

The CD 1 itself is by far the lowest-priced way of getting 2 CD hardware decks and a mixer with good ratings, so there are no good alternatives that do the same job.

Another approach is to buy the CD decks, and a DJ mixer, separately. Very well-rated, but more expensive DJ CD decks include the Denon DNS1200 USB DJ CD Player which gets a very good 4.2 user rating by 6 users and includes 4 effects, 3 platter effects, key adjustment, USB connection, and MIDI control of DJ software. The Accessories for the NUMARK CD Mix 1 DJ Package include DJ headphones, such as the Behringer HPX2000 Headphones High-Definition DJ Headphones.

You might need a PA system to play it through.

You might also want a dynamic microphone (the CD Mix 1 has a mic input). Numark CD DJ In A Box Complete DJ System Features

The Numark CD DJ In A Box Complete DJ System is a DJ system with 2 NDX200 CD players, headphones, and an M1A two-channel mixer. The CD players have large, performance jog wheels, and can play CDs and CD-Rs. The CD players have anti-Shock(TM) buffered skip-protection technology. The mixer has two input channels, mic input, main and headphone output.

. . .

Numark CD DJ In A Box Complete DJ System Pros/Cons.

Pros.

The Numark CD DJ In A Box Complete DJ System is given a reasonable 3.0 user rating by 8 customer reviews. Users say that the system is easy to use and works well.

Cons.

One of the customer complaints was that the CD DJ doesn’t come with speakers or an amplifier. The user didn’t mention that to hear the sound it can be plugged into most stereo units. Of course for live performance, a PA system might be needed by a DJ playing venues which are not built for music, but any club or similar venue will already have an in-house PA system. The PA system you would need would, of course, vary considerably according to the size and type of venue (for example, an outdoor venue would need a much more powerful PA system to produce the same volume of sound for the same number of people, due to lack of reflections off walls). So choice of a PA system will be different for different uses (and hiring one might sometimes be a better option), while the rest of the CD DJ system can stay the same.

One user had problems with the CD players, and more than one user had problems with customer service (which many Numark customers say is very bad) and refunds.

Numark CD DJ In A Box Complete DJ System in use

The Numark CD DJ is said to work well by about half the users. See below for much better-rated alternatives.

. . .

Alternatives to the Numark CD DJ In A Box Complete DJ System

The Alternatives to the Numark CD DJ In A Box Complete DJ System include much better-rated equipment. The obvious choice is the NUMARK CD Mix 1 DJ Package, which is far better rated, with an outstanding overall user rating of 4.7, from 7 users. It has 2 aux inputs although you’ll need an additional phono pre-amp if you want to use them for vinyl turntables. It is said, by users, to be a very good basic CD DJ system, (but without the range of effects and other facilities available on more expensive systems). It is also a lot cheaper (at the time of writing) than the “Numark CD DJ In A Box Complete DJ System”, and is a much better buy, and by far the lowest-priced way of getting 2 CD decks and a mixer with good ratings.

For a much more expensive CD DJ system with more facilities and much higher quality, the Numark MIXDECK Universal Dj System gets a very good 3.8 overall user rating. It also acts as a MIDI controller so can be used to control most DJ software for even greater flexibility and facilities. You get lots of effects, harmonic mixing, looping, sampling, hot cues etc. which enable live remixing.

. . .

Accessories for the Numark CD DJ In A Box Complete DJ System

The Accessories for the Numark CD DJ In A Box Complete DJ System include a PA system to play it through.

You might also want a dynamic microphone (the CD DJ has a mic input).

Numark MIXDECK Universal Dj System Features

The Numark MIXDECK Universal Dj System can play from CDs, MP3 CDs, USB flash drives, iPod, computers (Mac or PC), and external inputs. You can record your set to iPod and listen later. The mixer has EQ/rotary kills, replaceable crossfader (with switchable slope and reverse), and complete controls for iPod. It has beat-synced DSP effects with wet-dry fader: chop, echo, filter, flanger, pan, phaser. It includes a studio-quality computer interface for up to 24bit, 88.2kHz audio.

This is a complete DJ system with CD/MP3/USB decks, mixer, computer audio and MIDI interface, and a Universal Dock for iPod. It uses the traditional two-decks-and-a-mixer layout, and two large, touch-sensitive illuminated platters and controls for cueing and scratching. The input/output section includes balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA outs (stereo Main outputs, as well as Booth and Record outs), and two sets of stereo, switchable phono/line inputs for external sound sources. The Mixdeck can act as a MIDI controller for DJ software, with stereo audio from the computer via the USB connection. There’s also a complete cueing section with dual 1/8 and 1/4-inch headphone outputs, dedicated cue gain, and mini-crossfader control. Master output levels are visible on dual-color stereo LED meters. There’s a direct stereo output from each deck for use with timecode control interfaces including Serato Scratch LIVE software or external effects processors. The platters’ outer rings illuminate for visual indication of deck performance and mode. You can adjust players to perform just like vinyl on turntables thanks to their independent start and stop-time controls on each deck.

Effects are available with integrated, beat-synced DSP effects that include chop, echo, filter, flanger, pan, and phaser. Each effect is fully adjustable and a dedicated wet-dry fader controls them all. The MIXDECK contains a set of beat and pitch tools that will help you with beat matching and harmonic mixing. Start playing a track and MIXDECK automatically analyzes its BPM (tempo), and displays it on screen. There’s also a Tap tempo button for manual BPM entry. You can alter the track’s BPM by ±6, 12, 25, and 100% using the pitch fader. For each of those ranges, you can also engage Key Lock, which holds the pitch (key) of the track while you independently manipulate its BPM. There’s also a set of pitch-bend buttons on each track for quick tweaks.

Remixing tools include looping on a set of easy-to-understand controls, sampling, and easily accessible hot cues. Numark’s familiar Bleep/Reverse gives you the ability to keep time moving forward while you cut or reverse the track. You can play tracks from discs in single-track, continuous, and programmable playback modes for flexible performance. Fader Start (which can be used with compatible CD players) enables MIXDECK to start playing the track you have cued up when you move the crossfader. Two large, backlit displays can monitor BPM, CD and MP3 text tags, navigate folders, and effect status.

Package includes MIXDECK Universal DJ System, USB Cable, Audio driver CD, Power Supply, Quick Start Guide.

. . .

Numark MIXDECK Universal Dj System Pros/Cons.

Pros.

The Numark MIXDECK Universal Dj System gets a very good 3.8 rating from 9 customer reviews, and is said to be a great system for the price, very easy to use with lots of features.

Cons.

One of the customer complaints was that the MIXDECK is said to be incompatible with some systems, and to cause serious problems on other systems. According to one user, if the computer crashes, it crashes the whole Mixdeck system, so you can’t just continue to DJ from the CD players.

One user mentioned that the iPod controls don’t include EQ.

Customer support was described as very poor, which is a common complaint about Numark products.

The Numark MIXDECK is both easy to use for beginners, and also offers lots of advanced features for experienced DJs.

. . .

Alternatives to the Numark MIXDECK Universal Dj System

The Alternatives to the Numark MIXDECK Universal Dj System include various options, such as simpler and cheaper all-in-one DJ systems, or buying components separately.

For cheaper options, the much simpler and cheaper NUMARK CD Mix 1 DJ Package gets an outstanding overall user rating of 4.7, from 7 users. It has 2 aux inputs although you’ll need an additional phono pre-amp if you want to use them for vinyl turntables. It is said, by users, to be a very good basic CD DJ system, (but without the range of effects and other facilities available on systems like the Mixdeck). It is by far the lowest-priced way of getting 2 hardware CD decks and a mixer with good user ratings.

Another approach is to buy the CD decks, and a DJ mixer, separately. Very well-rated DJ CD decks include the Denon DNS1200 USB DJ CD Player which gets a very good 4.2 user rating by 6 users and includes 4 effects, 3 platter effects, key adjustment, USB connection, and MIDI control of DJ software.

Buying components separately can produce a systems which is less likely to crash. One user said that the whole Mixdeck crashes if a computer it is controlling, crashes, but with separte CD decks and mixer, if one part of the system has a problem, it’s usually possible to continue using other parts of the system, although for more reliability, a DJ might like to include some form of backup, such as a simple mp3-player with ready-mixed DJ sets.

. . .

Accessories for the Numark MIXDECK Universal Dj System

The Accessories for the Numark MIXDECK Universal Dj System include a PA system to play it through.

You might also want a dynamic microphone or two. A well-rated mic is the Behringer XM8500 Dynamic Microphone, Cardioid, which gets an excellent 4.7 overall user rating (with no negative reviews at all), and you also might need a suitable mic cable. You might also want a microphone stand or two.

You might need some more music CD’s.

Hercules DJ Console MK4, user reviews, user ratings, alternatives, user comments etc.

Tuesday, August 16th, 2011

The Hercules DJ Console MK4 gets very good user-ratings.

We’ll go over the features and facts a bit later on, but first, here’s a few user comments . .

“this little mixer is awesome” . . . read more (by Czr =) , Amazon).

Read the rest of the product report below . . .

. . .

“It’s a good value and a great product” . . . read more (by Ian Johnson , Amazon).

“Great for Mobile DJs” . . . read more (by Jesse Q , Amazon).

. . .

Hercules DJ Console MK4 Features

The Hercules DJ Console MK is a 2-deck controller with 2 stereo outputs, 2 stereo inputs, with transport cover and shoulder strap. It’s a USB controller with 4 in/4out, builit in audio. Easy synchronize either with pitch rotary buttons or with sync button. Record your mixes as audio files. Loop the music on 1, 2, or 4 beats, and add effects. For MAC or PC, with Virtual DJ. Customize your console by placing the included graphic skin underneath the see-through plate on top of the controller.

. . .

Hercules DJ Console MK4 Pros/Cons.

Pros.

The Hercules DJ Console MK4 gets a very good 4.1 user rating from 10 users. Users like the fact that you can map the keys, customizing the controls to your own preferences. Users like the fact that it’s small, light and portable. Users say how exellent the audio connections are, with 4 inputs for external equipment such as turntables (vinyl or CD), samplers, iPod, etc. as well as RCA outs for both monitors etc. The sound quality is said to be excellent. User say what excellent value for money the MK4 is.

Cons.

One of the customer complaints was that the MK4 comes with Virtual DJ LE edition, which users recommend upgrading to the Pro edition, although as another user said, it can also easily be used with software such as Traktor, with MIDI mappings downloadable from the website.

Users say that the functionality is somewhat limited by the absense of kill switches and sample buttons. One user said that the rotary pitch control is “rather annoying”. Other users point out that this DJ console is great value for money, and of course there are more expensive ones available (see below) for those who want more functions.

One user said that the shoulder-strap was not present when he got the unit.

. . .

Hercules DJ Console MK4 in use

The Hercules DJ Console MK4 is said to be a great little mobile DJ console, and superb value for money.

. . .

Alternatives to the Hercules DJ Console MK4

The Alternatives to the MK4 include the others in the range of Hercules DJ consoles. The DJ Control MP3 e2 (see our product report on that) is a lot cheaper (at less than half the price, at the time of writing) and rated very similarly to the MK4, but doesn’t come with a soundcard at all, so you’d have to buy one of those, and while you can get good quality 2-output sound cards cheap, to use the system as a DJ normally would, using headphones for monitoring, you’d need to get a 4-out soundcard such as the very well-rated Native Instruments AUDIO 2 DJ Interface, which gets a superb 4.6 user rating from 11 users, and is the best-rated option in its price range, but that would bring the price of the system up to more than the MK4.

Better Hercules DJ consoles include the DJ 4Set, which can use 4 decks, larger jog wheels, (but only has 1 user rating as yet), the Hercules DJ Console RMX (See our product report on that), which gets a superb 4.5 user rating (from 41 user reviews), and has kill buttons, loop/bend/fx/sampler buttons, a mic input, and VirtualDJ 5 DJC Edition. The top Hercules model currently is the 4MX, which comes with even more features, including metal casing, even better jog wheels, talkover function on the mic input, 4 virtual decks, VirtualDJ 7 LE DJC Edition, and gets an outstanding 4.6 user rating.

The obvious alternative to the Hercules range, are the Numark consoles. The Numark MIXTRACK DJ Software Controller (See our product report on that), which gets an excellent 4.3 user rating (from 33 user reviews) has no built-in so, and is the best-rated option in its price range. It comes with a version of Traktor software.

The Numark MIXTRACK PRO (See our product report on that), which gets a very good 4.3 user rating (from 39 user reviews), and is said to be excellent value for money.

A higher-level Numark alternative is the Numark MIXDECK Universal Dj System, which gets a reasonably good 3.8 user rating from 9 customer reviews.

Other more expensive alternatives include the Vestax VCI-300 Dedicated USB MIDI DJ Controller for Serato ITCH (Black), which gets an outstanding 4.5 user rating by 11 users, with most user being very happy with it. There are some complaints about the mic input and headphone level (both of which can be fixed by using a small, cheap audio mixer), but mostly it gets very good reviews. Users say that Serato Itch software is excellent for scratching, professional and well laid out, but also mention that it has no effects at all. So you need to think carefully about what features you want in your DJ system.

Is a DJ console right for your needs?

As well as comparing different DJ consoles, you might like to ask yourself if a DJ console is really the most suitable equipment for your needs. The obvious alternative is a hardware setup, either vinyl or CD decks, with a DJ mixer.

Don’t forget that some DJ mixers can also be used as MIDI controllers for most DJ software. So can have the best of both worlds at once. An example of this is the Behringer DDM4000 DJ Mixer (see our product report on that), which can be used to control most DJ software, as well as being a well-rated hardware DJ mixer in its own right.

Another consideration is your music collection.

See our more detailed guide to choosing the best DJ setup for your needs.

. . .

Accessories for the Hercules DJ Console MK4

The Accessories for the DJ Console MK4 include better DJ software (check for compatabilty before buying), such as Traktor (very well-rated DJ software), or Virtual DJ (cheaper DJ software).

You might also need DJ headphones, audio cables, a dynamic microphone, a microphone stand, and of course mp3′s.

Other possible accessories include a PA system, CD decks or vinyl decks, audio monitors and a laptop stand.

You might need a small external audio mixer if you want to add a microphone to your mix, such as the well-rated Behringer XENTX502 5-Channel Mixer (See our product report on that).

Numark MIXTRACK PRO Features

The Numark MIXTRACK PRO has large, touch-sensitive platters for accurate control and scratching, a classic, dual-deck layout with mixer section. It is a hardware controller with built-in audio in and out to feed your headphones and the sound system. It has lighted controls indicate status in software so you spend less time looking at the computer. The package includes Virtual DJ LE software.

. . .

Numark MIXTRACK PRO Pros/Cons.

Pros.

The Numark MIXTRACK PRO gets an excellent 4.3 overall rating from 39 user reviews. Users commend the light weight and durable build, as well as the features and usability. More than one user says that it works well for scratching (unlike most of the cheaper DJ consoles). Users say that it has the “right amount” of controls, enough to do what you need, and not too much to be confusing.

Many customers said that the Mixtrack is better than they could have expected, and excellent value for money.

Cons.

One of the customer complaints was that the MIXTRACK PRO got shipped late. One user said that the console itself is excellent but didn’t like the soundcard, and advised getting the standard Mixtrack (see our product report on that), and buying a good quality soundcard to go with it. Another user said that the software had less features than he expected. Another user had problems with his unit, and then was told the repair would take 6 weeks, which he felt is too long.

Overall, nearly all customers were very happy with the Mixtrack.

. . .

Numark MIXTRACK PRO in use

The Numark MIXTRACK PRO is an ideal DJ console according to many users, from beginners to experienced DJ’s. Nearly all users say that it excellent value for money.

. . .

Alternatives to the Numark MIXTRACK PRO

The Alternatives to the Numark MIXTRACK PRO include the cheaper Numark MIXTRACK DJ Software Controller, which has no built-in sound-card, so you have to buy one separately, such as te very well-rated Native Instruments AUDIO 2 DJ Interface, which gets a superb 4.6 user rating from 11 users, and is the best-rated option in its price range (much better-rated than the slightly cheaper Numak interface). The standard Mixtrack comes with a version of Traktor software.

If you have an iPod, another alternative is the Numark IDJ3 Universal DJ System, which is similar to the standard Mixtrack, but includes an iPod port and built-in audio connections (so you can use it without a computer).

Other alternatives include the Hercules DJ Console RMX (see our product report on that) which is the best-rated DJ console on Amazon (at the time of writing), and priced very similar to the Mixtrack Pro, or the Hercules DJ 4 Set, which is also priced about the same as the Mixtrack Pro, or the more expensive Hercules DJ Console 4-MXwhich is their “Pro” model, which has improved jog wheels and 4 deck controlability. It gets an excellent 4.6 user rating from 5 users (at the time of writing).

For other cheaper alternatives there is the Hercules DJ Control MP3 e2 (see our product report on that), which is (at the time of writing) less expensive than the standard Mixtrack, and gets good user ratings. Priced above that (but below the 4-MX), is the Hercules DJ Console MK4, which gets a good 4.1 overall user rating from 10 users. It has 4 outs plus audio inputs (unlike the more expensive DJ 4 Set), and gets good user reviews.

For more expensive alternatives than the Mixtrack Pro, the Vestax VCI-300 Dedicated USB MIDI DJ Controller for Serato ITCH (Black), gets an outstanding 4.5 user rating by 11 users (an even higher rating than the Mixtrack Pro), with most user being very happy with it. There are some complaints about the mic input and headphone level (both of which can be fixed by using a small, cheap audio mixer), but mostly it gets very good reviews, but at well over twice the price of the Mixtrack Pro, is it really worth the money? Users say that Serato Itch software is excellent for scratching, professional and well laid out, but also mention that it has no effects at all. So you need to think carefully about what features you want in your DJ system, to choose between the Vestax and the Mixtrack Pro.

Behringer BCD3000 DJ Mixer Pros/Cons.

Pros.

The Behringer BCD3000 DJ Mixer is given a reasonably good 3.3 overall user rating by 27 customer reviews. Users say that the info on the Traktor website makes this mixer easy to use with more advanced versions of the Traktor software, as well as other DH software.

Cons.

One of the customer complaints was that the BCD3000 is said by one user not to perform well with Mac (although it does perform well with PC). Some users had problems with software and drivers, but did comment that the Behringer customer support was excellent. Some users say that there are no drivers which work with Vista and Windows 7, but as their comments were some time ago, please confirm with Behringer as to the current availability of drivers.

One user said that the mic input was a problem, as it didn’t work for him until he reprogrammed the unit, and then replaced the sound of Deck A. He suggested that using a separate audio mixer for the mic, was a better option, such as using a small audio mixer such as the Behringer XENTX502 5-Channel Mixer (see our product report on that).

Some customers said that the feel of this mixer was cheap.

. . .

Behringer BCD3000 DJ Mixer in use

The Behringer BCD3000 is said to be great for a beginner DJ, by many users, but a small number of users have problems with it.

. . .

Alternatives to the Behringer BCD3000 DJ Mixer

The Alternatives to the BCD3000 DJ Mixer include the M-Audio Torq Xponent Advanced DJ Performance /Production System, which several users of the Behringer, say is “better”, but at the time of writing, the user rating is little better than the Behringer, despite the M-audio costing more than twice as much. The two consoles below are a lot better-rated than the Torq, as well as being cheaper.

The two best-rated DJ consoles (at the time of writing), are the Hercules DJ Console RMX (see our product report on that), and the Numark MIXTRACK PRO (See our product report on that). Both are priced at around the same point, which is less than twice the price of the BCD3000. The Hercules DJ Control Steel gets an even better user rating, but from fewer users (at the time of writing), and is priced slightly cheaper.

For cheaper while still well-rated products DJ consoles, see the Numark Mixtrack (see our product report on that)
which is also very well rated, and the Hercules DJ Control MP3 E2 (see our product report on that), fairly well rated but cheaper, and both of those are cheaper than the BCD3000.

For a well rated DJ mixer (the BDC300 is more of a DJ console than a DJ mixer), see our product report on the Behringer DDM4000 DJ Mixer, which can be used to control DJ software, although it lacks jog-wheels (so you can’t scratch using the hardware, although you can still do a bit of scratching using a mouse with software), but is a real hardware mixer with great user ratings, but it does cost rather more.

If you do want to be doing some scratching, then a hardware DJ mixer (such as the Numark X6 Digital Scratch Mixer with Effects, or the cheaper Numark M2 Professional Scratch Mixer (see our product report on that) ), and vinyl turntables are the way to go (and will scratch far better than most digital DJ consoles), although the Serato systems enable vinyl decks to be integrated with software (for easy scratching with mp3′s etc) if you want both options.

If you are not sure whether hardware or software DJ systems are best for you, see our detailed guide to choosing the best DJ setup for your needs.

. . .

Accessories for the Behringer BCD3000 DJ Mixer

The Accessories for the Behringer BCD3000 DJ Mixer include better DJ software (check for compatabilty before buying), such as a better version of Traktor.

You might also need DJ headphones, audio cables, a dynamic microphone, a microphone stand, and of course mp3′s.

One user said that since, in his experience, the mic input was not easy to use effectively, it might be easier to use a small audio mixer to mix the signal from a microphone with the output of the DJ system, such as the Behringer XENTX502 5-Channel Mixer (see our product report on that).

Other possible accessories include a PA system, CD decks or vinyl decks, audio monitors and a laptop stand.

ION Audio iCUE3 Discover DJ System, user reviews, user ratings, user comments, alternatives, features etc.

Sunday, July 31st, 2011

The ION Audio iCUE3 Discover DJ System is a beginners DJ console.

We’ll go over the features and facts a bit later on, but first, here’s a few user comments . .

“Fantastic piece of gear, perfect for beginner DJs!” . . . read more (by corporation “corporation”, Amazon).

Read the rest of the product report below . . .

Contents:- Features, Pros/Cons, In use, Alternatives, Accessories, User feedback, Summary.

. . .

“This product is GREAT” . . . read more (by T. Thompson- Kinney “DJ Spasmodic” , Amazon).

“quality is very good” . . . read more (by Peter Dougherty , Amazon).

. . .

ION Audio iCUE3 Discover DJ System Features

The ION Audio iCUE3 Discover DJ System can ccess your entire digital library with support for M4A, AIFF, WAV, MP3, FLAC and OGG audio files as well as iTunes library. It is a two-deck controller with volume, three-band EQ, pitch controls, and scratch wheel for each deck. It has large, touch-sensitive scratch wheels, works with both Mac and PC, includes MixVibes Cross LE DJ software. It has a USB connection, cues and scratching are possible, plus auto beat-matching, looping, and record and play your mixes. Comes with USB cable.

. . .

ION Audio iCUE3 Discover DJ System Pros/Cons.

Pros.

The ION Audio iCUE3 Discover DJ System gets a reasonably good 3.7 overall user rating from 42 customer reviews, and is said to feel “well-built” (even though being made of plastic), and users say that the hardware device can be used to control any MIDI-compatible DJ software including Traktor, Virtual DJ, Mixxx, DJay and more. The jog wheels are said to be “great” by one user, and overall, users rate it a excellent value for money for a beginner at DJing.

Cons.

One of the customer complaints was that the ION Audio iCUE3 needs an audio interface, since it doesn’t come with one. However, this can be regarded as a positive point, giving the user the choice of quality and price of audio interface, from the one built-in to the laptop, all the way up to high-quality devices.

One user said that while it works well with some earlier Mac opperating systems, more recent ones can give problems with the linkage between hardware and software. Another user said that it did not work with Windows 7.

One user mentioned having problems with the jog-wheel, but the other 40 users didn’t have this problem. A small number of users say that the software won’t work properly, but a much larger number of users say that it works fine.

While a few users say that it doesn’t work because the software is never updated, another user said that the software update he got, fixed a minor problem so it works even better.

A few users say that they found it difficult to understand and use, but a larger number say how quick it is to install and how easy it is to use.

. . .

ION Audio iCUE3 Discover DJ System in use

The iCUE3 is said to be great to use for a beginner, by the majority of the user reviews.

. . .

Alternatives to the ION Audio iCUE3 Discover DJ System

The Alternatives to the ION Audio iCUE3 Discover DJ System include the Hercules DJ Control MP3 e2 (see our product report on that), which is only slightly more expensive than the ION, but gets a better user rating from more users. The Numark MIXTRACK DJ Software Controller, gets a very good 4.3 user ratings from 33 users, and although slightly more expensive than the iCUE3, gets a better user rating. You would have to buy a soundcard to get the full benefits from using either of these.

Priced above the Hercules MP3 e2, is the Hercules DJ Console MK4, which gets a good 4.1 overall user rating from 10 users. It has built-in audio in and out (so no soundcard needed) and gets good user reviews. If you want something better, Hercules also make the RMX (see our product report on that).

Is a DJ console right for your needs?

As well as comparing different DJ consoles, you can ask yourself if a DJ console is the most suitable equipment for your needs. The obvious alternative is a hardware setup, with either vinyl decks or CD decks, with a DJ mixer. If you are going to be scratching then vinyl is best. Have a think about what kind of DJing you will want to be doing. If cost is the most important issue, then a DJ console like the ION, will almost certainly be a lot cheaper than CD or vinyl-based alternatives.

Another consideration is your music collection. It makes sense to use music you already own, and while it is easy to transfer vinyl and CD’s to mp3′s it is not realistic to transfer mp3′s to vinyl. It might be cheaper to buy new music as mp3′s than other formats, unless you are especially interested in old used records. Searching through music is obviously very different with different equipment, as good DJ software can instantly search huge numbers of mp3′s for track title (or partial title), artist, genre, BPM etc, but looking through physical records or CD’s is a very different matter, and if you need to have access to a large amount of music, transportation is important too. A DJ console such as the ION, is suitable for anyone starting DJing or starting with DJing mp3′s.

See our more detailed guide to choosing the best DJ setup for your needs.
