Hercules DJ Console RMX Pros/Cons.

Pros.

The Hercules DJ Console RMX gets an excellent 4.5 user rating from 40 customer reviews). Most of the users rate it very highly, as a general DJ system for beginner or intermediate DJ’s. The sound quality is said to be excellent, and users praise the customer service, as well as the availability of a great user forum, and other online support.

It comes with a “lengthy instruction manual on the basics of scratching and mixing. You’ll be on your way to hosting parties in no time” according to one user. Users mention that since it has audio inputs, it is very easy to mix in additional sources such as vinyl decks, CD players, iPods, samplers, and other audio sources. The multiple outputs are also useful, one user says “so you can mix at a venue while broadcasting live on radio or internet stream.

Cons.

One of the customer complaints was that the RMX is said to be somewhat challenging to setup for a beginner:- “The Hercules may be somewhat difficult for beginners to set-up right out of the box, but once you do, playing is a breeze“. Users say how good the manual is, so setting-up is not that difficult, if you follow the instructions. Some users specifically comment on how quick and easy it is to set up, with one user saying “Out of the box, installation was less than 10 mins with installation of the software and drivers. I was up and running“. Another user also says that it took only 10 minutes to set up (and mentions that he’s not an expert).

One user mentions that the software that comes with the package is “subpar” and that the user would be better off using something like Traktor (excellent dedicated DJ software), Virtual DJ (a much cheaper DJ software), or Ableton (live performance software). Other users agree that better software makes a huge difference to usability (although it will cost you more, of course).

One user mentions that the kill switches don’t have LED’s, so I guess you have to remember whether you’ve used them (or listen to the audio).

While the jog-wheels can be used for scratching, with the software, as one user says, this is not the same as doing real scratching on vinyl. For anyone for whom scratching is important, they might be better off using vinyl decks and a hardware scratch mixer such as the Numark M2 Professional Scratch Mixer (see our product report on that), which is good value for money and gets great user ratings. Another user mentioned that there is some delay between any scratching you do on the jog-wheels, and the sound output. This delay (called “Latency”) is inevitable with any such digital system, and is another reason why, although the Hercules does allow you to do some scratching, it won’t be as good for scratching as vinyl decks and a proper scratch mixer.

Hercules DJ Console RMX in use

The Hercules RMX is praised by users for its many positive points, including good drivers for systems up to Windows 7 (and Mac too), as well as having “a huge support forum, and an excellent customer service record.“. “It’s been fantastic and user friendly“, is one user’s opinion of the RMX in use. Users praise the durable build and light weight. Overall it’s said to be a great choice for a beginner or intermediate DJ (experts might want to spend some more money on something even better).

Alternatives to the Hercules DJ Console RMX

The Alternatives to the Hercules DJ Console RMX include the Hercules DJ 4 Set, which can control 4 decks, but has only 2 outs, no audio in, and is made of plastic, but does have bigger, better jog wheels and is slightly cheaper (at the time of writing).

For a better quality Hercules than the RMX, the Hercules DJ Console 4-MX is their “Pro” model, which has improved jog wheels and 4 deck controlability. It gets an excellent 4.6 user rating from 5 users (at the time of writing).

For cheaper alternatives there is the Hercules DJ Control MP3 e2 (see our product report on that), which is (at the time of writing), about 1/3 the price of the RMX, and gets good user ratings. Priced above that (but below the 4-MX), is the Hercules DJ Console MK4, which gets a good 4.1 overall user rating from 10 users. It has 4 outs like the RMX, plus audio inputs (unlike the more expensive DJ 4 Set), and gets good user reviews.

Other well-rated cheaper alternatives the Numark MIXTRACK DJ Software Controller, which gets a very good overall user rating (4.3 from 33 customer reviews) and is priced very low currently, but has the disadvantage that you would need to buy an additional sound card in order to hear something different through the headphones than the main mix. However, even with the additional soundcard, it will probably still be cheaper than the RMX. Other options include the ION Audio iCUE3 Discover DJ System, the Ion IDJ iPOD DJ Mixer, and the Numark Stealth Control Professional Computer-DJ Performance Deck, but these are not so well-rated by users.

Is a DJ console right for your needs?

As well as comparing different DJ consoles, you might like to ask yourself if a DJ console is really the most suitable equipment for your needs. The obvious alternative is a hardware setup, either vinyl or CD decks, with a DJ mixer. If you are going to be scratching, then a hardware system will be better, vinly ideally, but even a hardware CD deck will scratch better than a DJ console (as one user pointed out). So have a think about what kind of DJing you will want to be doing.

Another consideration is, of course, your music collection. It makes sense to make use of music you already own, and while it is relatively easy to transfer vinyl and CD’s to mp3′s it is not realistic to transfer mp3′s to vinyl. Buying new music might be cheaper as mp3′s than other formats, unless you are especially interested in particular kinds of older music that you can get used versions of. Searching music is obviously very different with different equipment, as good DJ software can instantly search huge numbers of mp3′s for track title (or partial title), artist, genre, bpm or other factors, but looking through physical records or CD’s is a very different matter, and if you need to have access to a large amount of music, transportation is a factor too. A DJ console such as the RMX, is ideal for anyone starting DJing or starting with DJing mp3′s, and can effectively be used alongside other sources, since its audio inputs allows you to easily mix in sound from vinyl decks or CD players.

See our more detailed guide to choosing the best DJ setup for your needs.

Accessories for the Hercules DJ Console RMX

The Accessories for the Hercules DJ Console RMX include better DJ software (check for compatabilty before buying), such as Traktor (excellent dedicated DJ software), Virtual DJ (cheaper DJ software), or Ableton (live performance software), which users say are compatible with the RMX. Users of the RMX agree that better software makes a huge difference to usability (although it will cost you more, of course).

You might also need DJ headphones, audio cables, a dynamic microphone, a microphone stand, and of course mp3′s.

Other possible accessories include a PA system, CD decks or vinyl decks, audio monitors and a laptop stand.
