Hercules DJ Control MP3 e2 Features

This controller comes with software (for both PC and Mac), so all you need is a laptop and some mp3′s and you’re good to go (click here to learn more about mp3′s). The software beatmix automation makes it easy to do perfect cross-fades from one track to the next, and also provides useful things like effects, auto-looping, EQ, key-changes and pitch control.

The jog wheels can be used to navigate through a track (you can set your own cue points, or us those automatically chosen by the software) or for scratching. Some of the effects automate some commonly-used scratching patterns to make it even easier.

As well as playing mp3′s (and WMA files), the software will easily play tracks from any CD which is in your computer CD drive. It also lets you save your mixes to share with friends or as a demo to get gigs etc.

Hercules DJ Control MP3 e2 Pros/Cons.

Pros. Obviously, this DJ system is aimed at beginners (entry-level) or casual DJ’s. Those who want to do lots of complex scratching would need something different. The DJ Control is easy to use immediately yet enables automatic fully professional-sounding cross-fades and effects, so is ideal for anyone just starting as a DJ or who only needs to do the basics rather than win DJ battles (where only vinyl is trendy enough!).

People who bought this DJ setup and used it, are mostly very happy with it (as we will see from some more user comments below). One thing to keep in mind is that to use the headphone output at the same time, you need an additional sound output from your laptop. Thankfully, at a price of 21 cents (at the time of writing) for this little USB soundcard this is not too much of a challenge!! Many people also buy another better quality USB soundcard to get a more professional sound output than the built-in one on the laptop . . . at $10 or less, this is easy enough to do.

Cons. One of the customer complaints was that the EQ knobs are too close together to make it easy to do something like increasing the mid while decreasing the bass simultaneously. One user said that there are minor delays or glitches in the sound when using the jog wheel, but others have commented that it works perfectly. Also, since the buttons are small, some users mentioned that it is sometimes possible to push the wrong one by mistake.

The only other minor “problem” stated by one user was that the lights are orange rather than red as they are in some promotional pictures, so keep that in mind! Also you should know that the software only opens when the hardware controller unit is connected, so if you plan to practice somewhere, you need the hardware with you too, although really a new user would be practicing with both software and hardware anyway.

One of the most important user comments is that it doesn’t freeze or have other problems in use, which, after all is one of the most important things when DJing whether professionally or for fun . . . you need the reliability which this unit thankfully offers.

One of the biggest “complaints” from users is that it’s too easy to sound like a professional DJ using this unit, which is a shame for those who have spent years learning to beat-mix on vinyl or hardware CD decks . . . the Hercules does perfect beat-mixing at the touch of a button, and is so easy to setup and use that it takes all the time-consuming hard work out of learning to be a DJ. It is up to you whether you consider this a problem or an advantage

While some beginners might be wondering if they should spend more money and get more features, most real working DJ’s need to beatmix smoothly, and occasionally subtly use simple effects, all of which this unit does well. It’s easy to ruin a DJ performance by adding too many effects and tricks . . . as long as you can cross-fade well (which the Hercules does automatically for you), by far the most important job a DJ has to do is to choose the best tracks to play for a particular audience, and that’s always going to be up to you!

Don’t forget that you need decent DJ headphones, and Amazon does those as well.

Alternatives to the Hercules DJ Control MP3 e2

Alternatives to this Hercules mp3-E2 include the ION Audio iCUE MP3 Computer Music Mixing Station with Software, which is around the same price, and has similar features. However, users don’t like it as much as the Hercules, and many have complaints. In fact, of customers that go to the Amazon page for the ION, more of them end up buying the Hercules than the ION!

The only real competition is the Numark MIXTRACK DJ Software Controller. It adds about 50% to the price, but that’s what you pay to get the well-known brand name. It comes with Traktor Light (another great DJ brand-name), which one user complained only has 8% pitch correction, but overall, user feedback is even better for the Numark Mixtrack than for the Hercules.

The Hercules computer DJ system is very easy to setup and use effectively to do a great job of real DJing, and is ideal for beginners or anyone who needs to do the basics of DJing really well (rather than ruin their performance with too many effects!).

It’s up to you whether you want to pay around one and a half times as much for the Numark brand name, or go with the more cost-effective Hercules. Both recieve lots of praise from those who use them. If functionality and value is more important to you then the Hercules is better (click here to check the current Amazon price), but if brand name matters more to you then go with the Numark MIXTRACK DJ instead.
